Shunter is a new experimental, temporary cultural space at the intersection of contemporary club culture, performance, music, visual art and spatial design.
We are building this platform together with makers, collectives and artists — from Rotterdam, across the Netherlands and beyond — to create work that is relevant, urgent and experimental.
Sound, light, body and architecture operate as one.
The heart of Shunter is a series of multidisciplinary weekenders: peak moments where everything converges. Each one unfolds as a complete world — from performances and live concerts into day-and-night club programmes, inside and outside.

One year ago, Mark walked past this hall for the first time. A former NS warehouse next to Rotterdam-Zuid station, where trains used to be repaired and sent back into circulation. The rails still run across the floor, but its potential is unmistakable.We immediately saw what it could become.
Why we do this
We are Sanne, Mark and Onno. Each of us brings our own expertise to Shunter. Sanne in multidisciplinary production and the development of cultural projects. Mark and Onno have organized events all over Rotterdam in recent years — in parks, on islands, in basements.All of us have seen how spaces disappear. How difficult it is to find room to experiment. How the city is full of talent, yet has fewer and fewer places where that talent can grow.
In Rotterdam-Zuid, this tension is tangible. There is an incredible amount of energy and creativity here, but very little structural space for the things we love: electronic music, light art, performance, work that blurs the line between club and gallery.
Shunter is our attempt to create that space.
What we are building
A music venue where other things can happen too. Light installations that transform the space. Performances. Film screenings. Listening sessions on Sunday afternoons. Conversations.
We plan to open about one weekend per month, roughly ten times a year. This rhythm is intentional: it gives us time to build a strong program, to discover what is possible here, and to slowly grow something that lasts. Not only during those weekends, but also in between — for try-outs, for a maker who wants to experiment, for things we cannot yet imagine.
Our goal is to open this spring.
What we need
The hall is raw. Beautiful, but raw. Before we can welcome people, we need to install toilets, a bar, and a sound-insulating wall so that we fit well into the surrounding area. We will also set up the site with sufficient facilities for our visitors, such as bike racks.
The total renovation will cost around €75,000. We have already raised part of this — through grants, our own money, and many hours of unpaid work. We want to raise the final €40,000 together with you.
That is a lot! But we believe there are enough people who want to see this happen.
